Here's my report on the Maui Editions.
One thing to tell you. I rig my sails full when compared to the recommended
settings, so all these things that I am experiencing may be completely
different than your experience and you may think I'm crazy. After you read this
let my know what you think. I'm going to post something like this on the HSM
and other forums and I want to make sure that I am giving the right impression
of the sail to people. I have included a couple of photos for you.
The most noticeable thing is the draft, it's higher and more forward and much
more locked in. Due to this the sail feels more balanced between the hands and
never feels heavy on either arm. This really makes the sail "disappear" in your
hands while transitioning from the bottom turn to the top turn and makes it seem
even lighter than my Superfreak UL's. Paradoxically, even though it feels
lighter than the UL's, the locked in feeling of the draft makes if feel more
solid and substantial. It also translates to quicker sail reaction in
transitions. Awesome handling!
The Maui Edition handles higher wind and being overpowered even better than my
other Freaks. I just got back from Punta San Carlos where the wind is very
side-off. A friend who was with me and who usually rigs a sail size up from me
was sailing the same size as me and said he was overpowered could have gone down
a size. I felt slightly overpowered but was able to handle the huge wind power
that you have of the wave face there without any problem.
I like the higher foot and was able to pull the sail out of the whitewater much,
much easier and I'm sure it got stuck less often.
The sail rigs cleanly with zero flutter between the top two battens.
As far the the bottom window is concerned I don't see a need for. What's up with
that?
The bottom line. This is the ultimate wave sail. I have a pair of new ultra
loose quad boards that change direction so quickly and turn so tightly that
having a rig that can react quickly is more important than ever. The Maui
Editions are a perfect match for the newest, loosest multi fin boards. The Super
Freak Maui Edition is best handling sail in the waves by far of all the sails
that I have tried.
